Hello!
Me and my partner decided to start fostering animals in need. We have experience dealing with many different animals since childhood, but we have never fostered.
Two days ago we received Sparkey in our home. Sparkey is a 2 years old retired racing greyhound who came to us directly from the kernel.
He have never lived in a house before, so everything is new to him: all the noises (washing machine, someone's knocking on the door, television); the stairs (he can't walk on it yet); and basically everything.
The first hours were very stressful for the three of us. For us because it is our first time fostering and we had never had a greyhound before, and specially an animal with no previous contact with the 'real world'. To him, because he was very nervous, he didn't know what was expected from him and would get excited with everything, however, he slept calmly in the first night.
The training begun immediately: first by teaching him how to walk on the lead, then by making him obey and don't get excited with everything, especially with us leaving him alone in the house. We started by leaving alone for about 1 hour and he was a very good boy.
He's with us not even for a week and we already see he's completely different. He obviously loves to be cudled and hugged, but at first he would tremble. He still doesn't know how to play with his toys, but he likes to sleep with his Bugs Bunny.
He is very gentle and now that he starts feeling loved and secure, he does that very cute silly things like putting his belly up and adopting a coiled position and then looks at us with those cute eyes...
It is a tremendous feeling to see how he improved in so little time and how he feels much calmer and looks happier now. He is a very intelligent dog!
Here are the first videos and photos of Sparkey:
